The Society of Hungarian Culture of Transcarpathia regrets that the Ukrainian Constitutional Court decided to withdraw the law on language use adopted in 2012, due to formal issues. The withdrawal of the legislative act favourable for the national minorities is a cause for concern, since as a consequence of the decision there is currently no legislative act in force to govern the practical implementation of language use. We believe that the decision of the Constitutional Court is a significant step backwards in relation to the language rights of national minorities. Besides, we are concerned that the language bills that are currently discussed by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine may result in further limitations of the national minority rights and we hope that the parliament of Ukraine will accept a bill compatible with the European standards, taking the international commitments of Ukraine into account and involving  the representatives of national minorities, including Hungarians, into the drafting process.
